I Fought the Law and the Law Lost

As explained in my previous post, Neil and I had quite the adventure yesterday afternoon. Other than the final moments of our adventure, it was a rather pleasant journey. There were many curious passengers, some were rather shy and whispered their speculations to their partner, others asked many questions including one little guy (LG):

LG: “What’cha doin’?”
Me: “I’m taking photographs.”
LG: “Of what?”
Me: “Of the buildings and the scenery along the route.”
LG: “Why?”
Me: “So that I can make a video and share it with others.”
LG: “Oh. What’s that for?” (pointing to the laptop)
Me: “That’s so [the laptop] can take photos without me having to keep pressing the button on the camera.”
LG: (Leans in closer and tries to get a better look at the screen.)
Me: (Text messaging Neil.)
LG: (Leans in over my seat and watches me text message Neil.)
Me: (Looks up and smiles.)
LG: (Sits back and starts teasing his little friend.)

Another guy was asking about the software I used, the make and model of the camera, the intervals and many other technical questions. Most people just stared.

In all of the craziness, I didn’t stop to realize that Mr. Skycop wasn’t a Skycop at all, rather just a transit worker. He was calling the Skycops over from another station, but he had no authority to stop us from leaving. I find it most interesting that those with little authority, try to assert what little authority they possess, while those with greater authority, could care less. I doubt that the Skycops would have had much authority to do anything. However, given that Mr. Transit worker was saying that Neil was “uncooperative”, who knows in what temperament they would have arrived. Given the history of tazer killings in this city, I have less trust in the authority representatives of Vancouver and would rather exercise caution. Besides, I didn’t want my gear confiscated.

Here’s a still from the 2:48 minute mark in the video (note the uniforms):

    that was pretty cool…

was the camera on (P) or were you adjusting the exposure at each stop? I’m curious how you got your laptop to trigger your camera though.

The camera was on (P) at first, but then there were several missed shots as the lens was fishing. I changed it to Landscape mode after roughly 20 failed shots. That’s why it’s a little choppy in and out of the dark tunnels and bright sunlight. I had several failed shots at the extremes. The Canon EOS 30D comes with handy software to automate the taking of shots. Unfortunately, the minimum is 5 second intervals.

    Thats it.

The building in the top left of the frame is our building. You can’t see our window though. I originally thought the building on the right is the one we lived in. They are identical.
